For Morgan's April 1999 school vacation we went to visit my sister in Tuscon Arizona. She lives in the Sonora Desert. We had never been to the desert so it was a fabuous new learning experience for us. The landscape is incredibly different from anything we had ever expereinced before. As we looked out the airplane window when we were landing, it looked like we were landing on the moon, with no trees or grass.
One of the most impressive parts of the Sonora Desert are the Saguaro Cactus which is what most people think of when they hear the word cactus, yet it only grows in this desert. Below is a picture of one.
We visited the Desert Museum and learned more about the local vegetation.

Of course we really didn't have to go a museum to see the cactus, below is a view from my sister's yard:
