This directory provides the public use version of the Federal Reserve Board's Survey of Consumer Finances with additional variables calculated from the survey variables that are suitable for use with the SAS or Stata versions of the NBER TAXSIM calculator.

SAS programs by Kevin Moore of the FRB were used to construct these variables. Please consult the taxsim9.ado documentation for instructions on use. Note that Secondary Earner earnings are not separated from Primary earner earnings and there is no information on child care.

Variable names

The Kevin Moore SAS programs use different names for the 22 created taxsim variables. In the SAS and Stata files here, those names are changed to those expected by taxsim9.ado. No other variables are changed. The output files are available with both the SCF variables and the taxsim variables, or the taxsim variables alone.

Example of Use

use t2001 taxsim9,replace

Suggestions, help or questions may be directed to me. Please study the taxsim9.hlp file as well as the SCF documentation.

The main SCF page is at http://www.federalreserve.gov/econresdata/scf/scfindex.htm.

The SCF uses an unusual "Multiple Imputation" system in which each actual observation becomes 5 separate records. In a regression this would cause standard errors to be underestimated by a factor of the square root of 5. More information is available on the SCF website FAQ.
